You have generated a sign design in ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini or another AI tool. It looks brilliant on screen. Now you want it on a wall, above a shop, at a wedding or on a trade stand - and you have no idea where to start.
That is exactly what we do. Send us the image and we will turn it into a real, physical sign, made in our own workshop in Cradley Heath and delivered anywhere in the UK. You do not need to understand signage, materials or artwork files. You just need the picture.
We have been manufacturing signage and engraving since 1965, and AI-generated designs have quickly become one of the most common briefs through our door. We know what these files look like, what is wrong with all of them, and how to fix it.
Your AI image is a brief, not artwork
This is the single most useful thing to understand, and nobody tells you it. An AI image is a picture of a sign. It is not a file that can make one.
Every AI-generated design arrives with the same handful of problems: the lettering is misspelled or invented, the image is far too small to print at sign size, the typefaces do not exist, and the glow around the letters is light rather than ink. None of this is your fault and none of it is a dealbreaker.
So we do not print your AI image. We redraw it - rebuilding the design as clean vector artwork at the true finished size, with proper lettering and correctly specified colours. That redraw is free when you place your order. It is not an optional design extra, it is simply how this job has to be done.
If you want the full detail, read our guide to what actually happens to an AI image on its way to becoming a sign.
How it works
- Send us your AI image. Email the image to contact@tradeengraving.co.uk or use our contact form. A PNG or JPEG straight out of the AI tool is fine - you do not need to convert it to anything first. Tell us roughly how big you want it and where it is going.
- We tell you honestly what is makeable. We look at the design and come back to you with a straight answer: which parts we can reproduce exactly, which parts need adapting, and which parts are screen effects that cannot exist as a physical sign. There is no charge for this and no obligation.
- We redraw it as production artwork. This is the part that matters. We rebuild your design as clean vector artwork at the real finished size, set the lettering in a proper typeface with the correct spelling, and match the colours as closely as ink and material allow. Redrawing is free when you place the order.
- You approve a proof. We send you a proof showing exactly what will be made, at the real dimensions. Nothing goes into production until you have approved it, so there are no surprises.
- We manufacture and deliver. Everything is made in-house in Cradley Heath - printing, laser cutting and engraving under one roof. Many orders are produced within 24 to 48 hours of proof approval, then delivered UK-wide by tracked courier or collected from our showroom.
What your AI design will actually be made from
AI tools do not think in materials, so your design does not tell us how to build it. Here is how the looks that come out of these tools translate into things we genuinely manufacture.
| What your AI design shows | How we would actually make it |
|---|---|
| A flat, full-colour sign, poster or panel | UV-printed directly onto rigid board - ACM aluminium composite for permanent outdoor use, foamex for indoors, Correx for short-term and site signage |
| Thick letters standing proud of the wall | Laser-cut acrylic or aluminium letters, built up and stood off the wall on locators |
| A cut-out logo or bespoke shape | Laser-cut from acrylic or aluminium to your exact outline |
| A brushed or polished metal plaque with fine lettering | Engraved brass, stainless steel or aluminium |
| Coloured or painted metal lettering | Laser-cut aluminium finished in your colour |
| A two-tone industrial label or control panel legend | Engraved Traffolyte laminate |
| Polished gold, silver or chrome lettering and trim | Laser-cut gold or silver mirror acrylic, built up on a black acrylic panel |
| A marble, timber or textured background | UV-printed onto board - the texture is printed and looks convincing, but the surface stays flat |
Not sure which you want? You do not have to choose. Tell us where the sign is going and how long it needs to last, and we will recommend the right material.
What we cannot reproduce - and we will tell you straight away
AI image tools love neon. Ask for a sign and you will very often get a glowing one, because that is what looks striking in a render. We would rather be honest with you now than take your money and disappoint you.
- Anything that lights up. We do not make LED neon, neon tube, backlit or light-box signage. We can produce a flat printed or laser-cut sign that captures the shape and colour of a neon design, and it can look genuinely good, but it will not illuminate.
- Glows, light bloom and lens flares. On a screen these are emitted light. In print they can only be ink, so a soft glow becomes a pale haze. We usually redraw these as a clean, confident edge instead, which reproduces far better.
- Vinyl and window graphics, and fabricated totems or posts. These are not services we offer.
Worth saying plainly, because people assume otherwise: mirror gold, silver and chrome finishes are straightforward. We cut them from gold or silver mirror acrylic, usually built up on a black acrylic panel - a genuinely reflective surface, not a printed imitation of one. If your AI design has polished metallic lettering, that is a standard build for us.
Everything else - flat printed signage, cut lettering, dimensional letters, engraved plaques and labels - is made here in-house.
What to send us
The more of this you can include, the faster we can quote accurately. Do not worry if you only have the first item.
- The image itself, at the largest size the AI tool will give you. Send the original download rather than a screenshot - screenshots throw away detail we could otherwise use.
- The exact wording, typed out. This one really matters. AI-generated lettering is almost always wrong, so we need the correct text from you rather than guessing at it.
- Roughly how big you want it, and where it is going - indoors or outdoors, wall, fence, railings, window or freestanding.
- Any brand colours you need matched, ideally as a Pantone or hex reference.
- Your deadline, if you have one.
Already have proper vector artwork? Even better - see our artwork and file setup guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can you actually make a real sign from an AI-generated image?
Yes - it is one of the most common things we are asked to do now. We treat your AI image as the design brief rather than the artwork: we rebuild it as production-ready vector artwork at the correct finished size, then manufacture it. You do not need to know anything about signage, materials or file formats to get started. Just send us the picture.
My AI image is only about 1,000 pixels. Is that big enough for a sign?
Not on its own. At proper print resolution a 1,024-pixel image prints crisply at roughly 170mm across - about the size of a door plate, not a sign. Stretching it to sign size makes it soft and blocky. This is normal and it is not a problem, because we do not print your AI image directly. We redraw it as vector artwork, which can then be produced at any size, from a small plaque to a several-metre board.
The text in my AI design is misspelled or looks like nonsense. Can you fix it?
Yes, and we always do. AI image tools draw the shapes of letters rather than writing actual words, so wording comes out misspelled, garbled or invented. We re-typeset all lettering properly in a real typeface. When you send the image, type out the exact wording you want alongside it, including capitals and punctuation, and we will set it correctly.
Do you charge to redraw my AI design?
No. Redrawing your AI design as production-ready artwork is free when you place the order. We do not run it as a separate paid design service, because with an AI-generated image redrawing is not an optional extra - it is the only way to produce a sign that is sharp at full size and spelled correctly.
Can you make the glowing neon sign in my AI design?
Not as a sign that lights up - we do not manufacture LED neon, neon tube, backlit or light-box signage. We can produce a flat printed or laser-cut sign that captures the look and colours of a neon design, and it can look very effective, but it will not illuminate. We would rather tell you that up front than take the order and disappoint you.
What file should I send you?
Whatever the AI tool gave you. A PNG or JPEG download is perfectly fine, and we would rather have the original download than a screenshot of it, because screenshots lose detail. If you happen to have vector artwork - a PDF, EPS, AI or SVG - send that instead, as it saves redrawing. See our artwork and file setup guide for the full detail.
Will the finished sign look exactly like the AI image?
It will look like the same design, made properly - but not pixel-identical, and it is worth knowing why. Screen colours are made of emitted light and print colours are made of reflected ink, so bright neon-style colours come out slightly more muted. Glows, lens flares and reflections are light effects that ink cannot reproduce. Invented letterforms get replaced with a real typeface. We show you all of this on a proof before anything is made.
How long does it take?
Many orders are produced within 24 to 48 hours once you have approved the proof. Redrawing the artwork and proofing happens before that, and how long it takes depends on how complex the design is. We confirm a realistic lead time with your quote, and we regularly work to tight deadlines - tell us your date and we will tell you honestly whether we can hit it.
Do you do this for trade and resale customers?
Yes. We are a trade manufacturer, so if you are a designer, agency, marketing team or signage reseller sending us client-generated AI concepts, we can work to trade pricing and supply unbranded. Approved trade accounts can also work on Net 30 credit terms. Apply on our Trade Account page.
